I See a Cat

A round-eyed dog watches the animals it sees indoors and through a window, naming them in simple statements. A cat, bird, fly, bee, and squirrel each draw a different response from the dog, whose body and eyes show boredom, alertness, or sudden excitement. When a brown-skinned boy appears, the dog becomes excited again, and the two race through the yard together. The story follows the dog’s changing attention as the world comes into view.
