The Theodor Seuss Geisel Award celebrates books that help children take their first steps into independent reading. Presented by the Association for Library Service to Children, it recognizes both authors and illustrators for the way words and pictures work together. Eligible books are original American works published in English in the United States during the preceding year, with an intended audience from pre-K through Grade 2. The award began in 2006 and takes its name from the creator known as Dr. Seuss. Judges consider inviting subjects, clear sentences, carefully introduced vocabulary, repetition, and illustrations that help readers understand the text. Fiction, nonfiction, and poetry can all qualify. Each year includes a Medal recipient and may include Honor Books. Families can explore both distinctions to find stories that sustain a new reader's interest, then consider the child's confidence and preferred subjects when choosing a book.
