I Could Not Do Otherwise: The Remarkable Life of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker

This biography follows Dr. Mary Edwards Walker’s challenges to the expectations placed on women. As a teenager, she rejected corsets and long skirts in favor of pants with a short skirt, beginning a lifelong effort to change social conventions. Walker was an abolitionist, suffragist, Union spy, and advocate for unisex clothing for women. She was also the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor.
