I Am an American: The Wong Kim Ark Story

This book tells the story of Wong Kim Ark, born in San Francisco in 1873 to Chinese immigrant parents. As anti-Chinese laws and sentiment intensified, his parents could not become citizens and later returned to China while he remained in the United States. After visiting them, Wong Kim Ark was denied entry by officials despite his claim to citizenship and was imprisoned for more than a month. His legal challenge continued after his release and reached the U.S. Supreme Court.
