Hour of Need: The Daring Escape of the Danish Jews during World War II
Ralph Shayne, illustrated by Tatiana Goldberg
Set in Nazi-occupied Denmark in 1943, this historical graphic novel depicts Mette, a young Jewish girl, as her family tries to evade an impending roundup. Alongside Mette’s family, teachers, fishers, members of the resistance, and other Danish residents help Jewish neighbors make it safely to Sweden. Ralph Shayne incorporated experiences from his mother’s life, and the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center helped develop the book.
