Home Is a Heartbeat
Laekan Zea Kemp
A child lives in a crowded multigenerational, multifamily Latine home where each relative has a meaningful place. Abuelo works with tools in his workshop, Abuela tends her kitchen and herb garden, and Mami reads in an armchair by the window. Photographs recall ancestors who also lived in the house. At night, sharing a bed with Mami, the child hears the home’s “heartbeat” in the sounds of family members past and present.
