Augusta Baker’s grandmother fills her childhood with folktales, instilling in her a determination to find a way forward. While preparing to teach, Augusta discovers folklore and realizes that sharing stories is her calling. She becomes a children’s librarian in Harlem, challenging harmful portrayals of Black people by promoting authentic works by and about Black people. Her work later includes leadership at NYPL, teaching at Columbia University, and a storyteller residency in South Carolina.
