Seventeen-year-old Sebastian moves to New Gault to care for his estranged, abusive mother after her cancer diagnosis, honoring a promise to his Abuela. At the town’s technology-focused high school, student ambassador Lu introduces him to a system designed to prevent hate speech and bullying. The system offers safety but limits what people can say and how many words they can use. Sebastian declines its restrictions while navigating his mother’s illness and the unfamiliar community.
