Esquivel! Space-Age Sound Artist

This picture-book biography follows musician Juan García Esquivel from his childhood in Mexico to New York City. Surrounded by mariachi music while growing up, he became fascinated by sound despite having no formal musical training. Esquivel experimented with arranging sounds in unconventional ways and developed a distinctive style of space-age lounge music. His work became popular in the 1950s and 1960s, and later reached new listeners. The book presents his life and musical exploration alongside illustrations by Duncan Tonatiuh.
