Brownstone

At fifteen, Almudena spends a summer meeting her Guatemalan father, Xavier. He expects her to live in his neglected brownstone and help restore it, while she tries to understand his rapid Spanish despite not speaking the language. In his Latin American neighborhood, she meets residents whose lives include pleasures and hardships, as well as firm views about how a young Latina should speak, dress, and act. The experience asks Almudena to navigate family, culture, and her own place in a new community.
