In 1980s Soviet-occupied Estonia, sixteen-year-old Vik lives near a dangerous bog and forest. Five years after her younger sister Anna disappeared there, Anna returns unchanged in age, largely silent, and speaking Russian rather than Estonian. Vik begins to suspect the involvement of Soovana, a folklore figure associated with the bog. As villagers accuse Vik’s family of witchcraft, Vik and her friend Liis enter the bog to investigate what Anna’s return means.
