Fifty portraits show children growing up in different parts of the United States. The children and their families live in settings that include houseboats, yurts, farms, Native reservations, and Air Force bases. The book also includes adoptive families, stepfamilies, single-parent families, families with two mothers or two fathers, and children living with grandparents. Some of the featured children have health conditions. Together, these portraits present varied homes, family structures, and experiences of life in America.
