Sam is nonbinary, as is their best friend, TJ. Sam’s family accepts Sam’s identity while still expecting chores, homework, and respectful conduct toward teachers. In history class, however, Sam struggles with a teacher whose view of history seems limited to dead, straight, cisgender white men. The book follows Sam’s queer identity, friendship, family life, and conflict with this classroom perspective.
