A Take-Charge Girl Blazes a Trail to Congress: The Story of Jeannette Rankin

This book tells the story of Jeannette Rankin, the first U.S. congresswoman. As a girl, Jeannette took responsibility for caring for horses and her younger brothers and sisters. Later, after seeing children in poor conditions in San Francisco, she wanted to change the circumstances that affected them. In the early twentieth century, however, women could not vote to alter laws that failed to protect children. The account follows Rankin’s efforts to take action in response to injustice.
