The Texas Bluebonnet Award is a statewide reading and voting program for students in Grades 3 through 6, administered by the Texas Library Association. A committee chooses 20 books for each Master List. Participating schools and libraries encourage students to read at least five before voting for a favorite in January. The book with the most student votes wins the award and is honored during the Texas Library Association's annual conference. The association says the list is not designed for a particular curriculum and advises librarians to use their own collection policies when choosing titles. The Master List and the winner answer different questions: a committee builds the reading set, then eligible students choose their favorite. Edition labels often span two calendar years because reading and voting follow a school-year cycle. For families, the 20-book list is small enough to consider as a whole. Starting with a familiar genre or subject lets the child choose which five or more sound worth reading.
