Yasmeen, a Palestinian American seventh grader, moves with her family to San Antonio and tries to find friendship and a clearer sense of herself. There she meets Ayelet, a Jewish Israeli American classmate. Their potential friendship is challenged by their parents’ prejudices and by bullying at school. The novel follows Yasmeen’s adjustment to a new place while the two girls confront the obstacles between them and consider whether they can become friends.
