A Filipino American girl recalls a summer shaped by her grandmother Lola’s visit. She describes the season through familiar smells and tastes: sampaguita soap, mango jam, cassava cake, garlic and vinegar for lumpia, as well as pool chlorine, beach sunscreen, and tennis balls. Family food and memories join the summer’s everyday activities. When Lola returns to the Philippines, the signs of a new school year begin to replace summer, while the last of Lola’s mango jam remains.
