We Were the Fire: Birmingham 1963

Eleven-year-old Rufus Jackson Jones lives in Birmingham during the spring of 1963. Determined to stand up for his rights, he wants to join the civil-rights demonstrations taking place in his city and is drawn into their action. The story follows Rufus’s decision to participate despite his age, placing one boy’s resolve within the larger demonstrations in Birmingham. An author’s note accompanies the book.
