We Kiss Them with Rain

Fourteen-year-old Mvelo’s life has become increasingly difficult. Her mother is dying of AIDS, and an unnamed terrible event in Mvelo’s life remains unspoken in the family’s small shack. Set in South Africa, the story follows a girl growing up amid poverty, illness, death, and rape. As hidden matters are revealed, Mvelo encounters unexpected opportunities that may allow her to alter the direction of her life.
