Ways to Play

Riley plays in ways that are distinctly their own: arranging dolls and stuffed animals according to size and shape, turning torn newspapers into mountainlike piles, and making large curling marks with crayons. Told in a young narrator’s voice, the story addresses the hurt of being mocked for those play choices. A carefree dog appears alongside Riley, while soft watercolor illustrations accompany the different forms of play.
