Voices from the Underground Railroad
Kay Winters
In the 1850s, siblings Jeb and Mattie flee slavery by way of the Underground Railroad. Their journey takes them from Maryland toward Massachusetts, where they encounter people who aid their escape as well as slave catchers who pursue them. The story gives voice to the siblings and others who either help or obstruct them, using free verse alongside mixed-media illustrations, references, notes, and map endpapers.
