Violet and Jobie are mouse siblings whose sheltered life inside a house ends when people capture them and leave them in a nearby state park. Suddenly they must contend with predators and learn how to live outdoors. An older mouse, Zolian, guides them as they adapt. Jobie builds ties with other mice and finds a mate, while Violet forms a close bond with the curious, adventure-minded Zolian. When he vanishes, Violet follows his possible trail toward the migrating sandhill cranes, and the siblings ultimately move in different directions.
