When a catastrophe affects the Vanderbeekers’ upstairs neighbors, the Vanderbeeker children decide to make a healing garden in Harlem. Their plan centers on a nearby lot, but reaching it is not simple: a locked fence, thistles, and trash stand in their way. A wealthy real estate developer also has plans for the same space, putting the children’s garden project in conflict with another vision for the lot. The family works together through these obstacles as they try to create the garden next door.
