At the start of seventh grade in a predominantly white Texas town, Thai American Christine worries about where she belongs. When her Iranian American best friend Megan suggests cheerleading tryouts, Christine is interested but anxious about performing before the whole school and facing a student-body vote. The tryouts put their friendship under pressure when Megan chooses a different partner, hoping it will improve both girls’ chances. Christine and Megan eventually discuss Christine’s hurt and Megan’s reasoning as they navigate friendship, identity, and the competition.
