For decades, a common snapping turtle called Fire Chief traveled between ponds near a fire station. Firefighters came to recognize his yearly crossing to a larger pond for winter hibernation. As development changed a dirt road into a state highway, the journey became more dangerous. After a vehicle injured him, the Turtle Rescue League patched his broken shell and rehabilitated his legs with a custom wheelchair. The account also follows risks turtles face from egg to maturity.
