This account traces house sparrows’ long relationship with people. Around 12,000 years ago, sparrows in the Middle East began nesting near communities growing grain instead of migrating. As farming and migration spread, the adaptable birds travelled widely and were often treated as pests. Efforts to remove them frequently failed. More recently, changes in housing, transport, and farming have contributed to worldwide declines, raising questions about what sparrows can reveal about pollution and other environmental dangers.
