He keeps other parts of himself private, including blue toenail polish, lip-syncing alone, and his feelings for his best friend and teammate JJ. When Derrick’s father takes an out-of-town job, Derrick spends the summer with his estranged grandmother Claudia. She introduces him to southern beauty pageants, where Derrick begins to find a place to express himself.
