The Prisoners of Breendonk: Personal Histories from a World War II Concentration Camp

This book presents researched personal histories from Fort Breendonk, a site near Antwerp, Belgium. Built to defend Antwerp from a possible German invasion, the fort later fell into disrepair after World War I. Nazi forces took it over following their 1940 invasion of Belgium. About 3,600 prisoners were held there, and just over half survived. Archival and contemporary photographs and documents support accounts of the camp’s brutality.
