The Pirate Tree
Brigita Orel
Sam, a young boy, turns the gnarled tree on a hill into a pirate ship through play: a rope becomes an anchor and a sheet becomes a sail. He imagines himself as the ship's captain while searching for treasure. Then another child approaches the tree. The newcomer comes from outside Sam's street, and their differences initially stand between them. Through their shared pirate game, the lonely boy and imaginative girl develop a friendship.
