The Last Stand

Antwan Eady

On Saturdays, a boy works alongside his grandfather, Papa, harvesting peppers, plums, pumpkins, and eggs for a farmers’ market stand. Papa’s is the remaining market stand in their Black community, where they serve regular customers and deliver fruit on the way home. When Papa becomes too tired to do the work, the boy tries to carry it on himself, first making bicycle deliveries and later pulling a wagon to town to open the stand. It is an intergenerational story set in the rural South.
