Emma knows the menehune, legendary original people of Hawai‘i, are real even though no one believes her. The menehune are now in serious danger, and Emma may be able to help. The story draws on Hawaiian lore about the people who lived on the islands before the kanaka ʻōiwi arrived by sea. In that legend, menehune leaders feared the changes newcomers would bring and ordered men and firstborn sons to leave, while some chose to stay with their families.
