The Door of No Return

Kwame Alexander

In 1860, Kofi Offin lives in the fictional Asante village of Upper Kwanta, where he looks up to his brother Kwasi, listens to his grandfather Nana Mosi’s stories, and spends time with his friend Ebo. He clashes with a teacher who demands English instead of Twi and with a cousin who challenges him to a swim. After Kwasi kills a nearby leader’s son during a festival wrestling match, the brothers are abducted. Kwasi is beaten to death, while Kofi and other boys are taken to a fortress before a voyage on the USS Georgetown.
