The Best Liars in Riverview

Aubrey and Joel are seventh graders who spend time in a nature preserve near their Kentucky community. They share an unusual affinity and value the freedom they find there. Outside the preserve, expectations around sexual and gender identity weigh heavily on both of them. Those pressures lead them to consider the possibility of escape. The story places their friendship and search for room to be themselves alongside the natural space where they feel freer.
