Talking Leaves

Thirteen-year-old Uwohali has spent years apart from his father, Sequoyah, and is eager to reconnect when he returns to their Cherokee village. But Sequoyah's work on unfamiliar marks alarms friends and neighbors, who fear he may be practicing witchcraft. Uwohali gradually learns that the markings form an alphabet for the sounds of the Cherokee language. Told from the son's perspective, the story follows Sequoyah's efforts to create a written language.
