Fourteen-year-old Sparrow Cooke lives in Brooklyn and finds it hard to make friends, preferring books to spending time with other children. Her school librarian, Mrs. Wexler, has been the person who understands her best. After Mrs. Wexler dies in an accident, Sparrow is found at the edge of the school roof. Others believe she has attempted suicide, but Sparrow denies this and struggles to explain what happened.
