Shy is a book-loving giraffe whose particular interest is birds. He has learned about them from books, yet meeting one beyond the page proves much harder. When a real bird trills nearby, Shy wants to get to know her but is too nervous to leave the book’s gutter. The story follows his attempt to make contact, using colorful mixed-media artwork to show a reticent character facing the gap between reading about something and encountering it.
