Set in Virginia in May 1861, this historical account follows George Scott, a formerly enslaved Black man who has been hiding in the woods for two years. After seeing Black people enter Fortress Monroe, he concludes that it may offer refuge to people escaping slavery. At the fort, he meets Major General Franklin Butler, who shelters escapees and needs help locating a Confederate camp. Scott agrees to serve as a spy, while Butler appeals to President Lincoln and Congress to free Black people held as contraband.
