Twelve-year-old Elias is sent to Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave in hopes that its cool vapors will treat his consumption, also called tuberculosis. Beneath the cave, he encounters escaped slaves seeking freedom and a secret community connected to the Underground Railroad. What first sounds like an adventure becomes a fight to protect lives underground. Elias’s illness, the cave setting, and the fugitives’ danger shape his journey.
