Thirteen-year-old Sophie appears confident, stylish, and easygoing at school, but her home life is deeply troubled by her mother’s addiction. As Sophie’s aunt steps in, she introduces Sophie, who is biracial, to aspects of her heritage. Sophie works through the harm caused by alcoholism while reconsidering beauty, identity, and her place in her affluent Park Slope neighborhood. The novel contrasts her public image with the private pressures she carries.
