Playing with Lanterns

Wang Yage, illustrated by Zhu Chengliang

During Chinese New Year in a snow-covered Shaanxi village, Zhao Di receives two colorful paper lanterns from her uncle. She carries one into the cold night, taking care to keep its candle lit as she joins friends outdoors. The girls walk together with their lanterns, relight candles that go out, and react to the boys’ unruly behavior. On the holiday’s final evening, the village celebrates beneath the moon. At the traditional call, Zhao Di and her friends break their lanterns and burn them before the candles are extinguished, because leaving them intact is believed to bring bad luck.
