Barton’s childhood fascination with the sea led him to make a wooden diving helmet with glass windows. Later, he and Beebe developed the Bathysphere, a 5,000-pound metal sphere with small windows. On June 6, 1930, they were lowered 800 feet underwater, facing a leaking window, cramped conditions, and the risk posed by the hatch bolts.
