It begins with the author’s childhood recollections of Honolulu in the early 1940s, alongside poems honoring people stationed on the USS Arizona when Pearl Harbor was attacked. A later section turns to Hiroshima, offering glimpses of lives lost or changed by the bombing and introducing Koichi Seii, a boy who experienced the blast from miles away. The final section returns to postwar Tokyo, where Lowry and Koichi are both living.
