My Year in the Middle

In Alabama in 1970, Lu Olivera is an immigrant sixth grader attending a newly integrated school. Her classroom is shaped by racial polarization, and she notices the divide around her while trying to establish her own place. Lu discovers that she loves running, and her ability on the track leads to a new close friendship. As she moves through the school’s social groups, she considers the person and friends she wants to choose.
