Mosquitoes Don’t Bite Me

Nala Simiyu, a half-Kenyan seventh-grader whose mother uses a wheelchair, is not bitten by mosquitoes. After a drug-company leader learns about this trait, Nala helps with mosquito research and travels to Kenya to investigate her father’s family. When a man whose daughter died from malaria kidnaps her, the story also addresses health disparities, subtle racism, and questions about ownership of biological information.
