Like a Bird examines American slave songs, also called spirituals, which arose from the experience of enslaved Africans. Drawing on African rhythms and instrumentation as well as Christian-inspired hymns and biblical imagery, the songs express sorrow, pain, fear, anger, hope, love, faith, and resourcefulness. Thirteen songs inspire the accompanying artwork. The narrative provides historical and cultural context for each song and the artwork it prompted, with lyrics, a glossary, and additional resources in the end matter.
