Isabel in Bloom

Twelve-year-old Isabel leaves the Philippines to live with her mother in the United States, enrolling in a San Francisco middle school. Her mother’s job had allowed Isabel to live more comfortably with her grandparents in the Philippines, so their reunion is unfamiliar. Homesickness leads Isabel toward gardening, cooking, new friends, and a developing relationship with her mother. The novel is written in verse.
