In the Beautiful Country
Jane Kuo
In 1980, Ai Shi, who is called Anna in the United States, moves from Taiwan when her parents buy a restaurant in Los Angeles County. The business is far less successful than its former owner claimed, and the family cannot afford a car or easily connect with Chinese and Taiwanese immigrants. Anna is teased at school, the restaurant is vandalized, and financial pressures grow. Over time, friendships form and her mother’s Chinese recipes help bring customers to the restaurant.
