I Was Supposed to Be at School

Built from letters and pictures by children living in Maré, Rio de Janeiro, an area of low-income neighborhoods in Brazil, this book recounts how violent police raids shape their daily lives. The children wrote to the government, expressing sadness, fear, joy, and anger. Their words and images center the children’s experiences and assert every child’s right to live free from violence.
