Hand over Hand

In a small Filipino fishing village, Nina wants to join her grandfather on his old banca boat. He tells her that a boat is not a place for a girl, but Nina persists. She wants him to teach her how to jig fishing lines, set a hook, and bring in a fish hand over hand. Determined to show that she can fish as well as boys, Nina works to persuade her grandfather that she deserves a turn on the boat. Realistic watercolor illustrations accompany her efforts.
