Jule, a privileged American teenager, is running in Mexico while someone pursues her. The narrative moves backward through its chapters to reveal why she is being chased. Elsewhere, a hotel guest calling herself Imogen spends her time at the gym and tells others she was forced to leave Stanford, though the account makes clear that her identity is false.
